Vol. I — New York City Edition
The Independent New York City Lawyer Directory
A clear way to find the right attorney — NYC Lawyer Guide is an independent lawyer and attorney directory covering the five boroughs and the wider metro area, organized by practice area, so the search feels less like guessing and more like looking something up.
Why this guide exists
§ 01Finding a lawyer in New York City is harder than it should be. Search results mix paid ads, outdated listings, and firms that don't actually handle your kind of case, with genuinely qualified attorneys who happen to have a smaller marketing budget. There isn't an easy, neutral place to just look across a practice area and see who's out there. That's the gap NYC Lawyer Guide is meant to fill.
We are a New York City lawyer directory and information resource, not a law firm, a referral service, or a substitute for legal advice. We don't represent clients, we don't take a cut of any settlement, and we aren't affiliated with any court, bar association, or government agency. Our only job is to organize public information about attorneys practicing in New York City so that someone researching a legal question has a clearer starting point.
The guide is organized around how people actually search: by practice area first (real estate, business law, family law, criminal defense, personal injury, and more), and by borough or neighborhood second, since where a matter is filed or where a closing takes place often matters as much as the subject of the case itself. Each listing is meant to give the basics plainly, so a visitor can decide who to contact directly rather than being funneled toward whichever listing paid for top placement.
What you'll find here
Alongside the lawyer directory itself, we publish plain-language explainers on how different areas of New York law tend to work in practice, what to expect from a first consultation, and what questions are worth asking before you hire someone. None of this is legal advice, and none of it replaces speaking with a licensed attorney about your specific situation, but our aim is to leave you better prepared for that conversation than a search engine alone would.
We also try to be honest about the limits of a directory like this one. We can tell you what an attorney's stated practice areas are and roughly where their office is located, but we can't tell you how a specific case will turn out, and we don't screen attorneys the way a bar association's referral service might. What we can do is save you the first, most tedious part of the search: figuring out who exists, what they focus on, and whether they're even a realistic fit for your situation before you start making calls.
NYC Lawyer Guide is independently owned and operated. It is a work in progress, growing borough by borough and practice area by practice area, and we'd rather add depth slowly and get it right than publish a long list that isn't actually useful to the person reading it. If you're an attorney and would like to be listed, or if you spot something on the site that needs correcting, you'll find contact details in the footer below.
